We've done Europe multiple times, spent a good chunk of time across Southeast Asia and Japan, even made it down to South America a couple years back. Africa though has just never happened for us and I honestly can't explain why. We figured Morocco makes sense as a starting point since it feels a little more approachable for a first time on the continent. Would love to hear what spots are actually worth the visit and what the best way to get around the country is.

It's pretty common to knock out Europe, Asia, South America and still never get to Africa, the continent just keeps sliding down the list for most people. Morocco's a solid place to finally change that. You step into one of the medinas and lose all sense of direction within minutes, and most people end up wandering around longer than they planned. Most people kick things off in Marrakech and it makes sense, the place earns it. From there Fes is worth the detour since the old city there goes even deeper and gets more intense the further in you go. Once you're done with the cities it's worth heading out toward the Atlas Mountains, the scenery out there is a sharp contrast to everything you've seen up to that point.

Honestly the tips here are solid but there's one place that almost never comes up in these conversations. Chefchaouen is up in the Rif Mountains and people go for a day and end up staying three. As for wheels, you can rent a car in Morocco here https://getrentacar.com/en-US/morocco . Main roads are in decent shape so a standard car gets you pretty much anywhere you'd want to go. Just build in extra time between stops because you'll want to pull over way more than you planned.
