I'm heading to Portugal next month for work, staying in Almada for about ten days. My company's got meetings lined up but only for the first half of each day, so I'll have afternoons completely free. I want to drive up the coast, maybe hit Sintra, Cascais, some of the beaches north of the city. Renting makes more sense than trying to coordinate rides or figure out train schedules every single day. Should I be looking at rental spots in Almada itself or does everyone just go into Lisbon for better deals?

Coast trips eat up way more time than you'd think, especially with all the stops you'll want to make for photos and food. The convenience of picking up a car close to where you're staying saves you the hassle of dragging yourself into the city centre just to collect keys. Most of the international chains have locations scattered around, though their prices tend to climb pretty fast once you factor in all the add-ons they push.

The bigger rental companies charge you for the brand name and all the overhead that comes with running fancy offices in tourist areas. Locals rent out their own cars for way less and you get the same result, just without the corporate markup. You can see what's available to rent a car in Almada here: https://getrentacar.com/en-US/portugal/almada . Private rentals mean you're dealing with actual people instead of customer service scripts, and the cars are usually well maintained since it's their personal vehicle they're trusting you with.
